The Factory of the World
The Factory of the World presents a series of static, photographic-style video images from a small town and empty former electronics factory in northern Finland. The factory was closed in 2003 when the production was moved to Shenzhen, China.
The images are juxtaposed with audio narration about conditions experienced by workers in electronics manufacturing factories in China, where much of the world's consumer electronics products — such as smartphones, laptops, cameras — are made.
The work draws a connection between the former workers of Kemijärvi, a small town in Northern Finland, and those in the city of Shenzen, a huge city inhabited by 15 million people. While these places are geographically distant and culturally distinct, the lives and destinies of these people are connected in the global networks of commerce and capitalism.
The fictionalised narration describes the working conditions experienced in Shenzhen's factories, and is based on reports published by China Labor Watch and Finnwatch.
The soundtrack features a piece of Chinese classical music which was originally composed and orchestrated to appeal to Western ears.
